Paige’s little house on the edge of town usually gave her a sense of warmth and security. The quaint bungalow glistened with fresh white paint, and yellow lantanas bordered the sidewalk. Between the plague of grasshoppers and the drought, she’d had to replace the plants twice. Normally she stooped to admire a flower or snatch up a weed here and there before walking inside. Not today. This evening, her home’s charm had been swallowed up by derelicts from the past.
Small town librarian Paige Rogers has a secret. She’s spent more time running down terrorists than running down lost books.
A former CIA agent, Paige experienced a severe trauma seven years ago when, while on a mission in Africa, she was the sole survivor of an explosion. Fearful for her safety, she changed her name and went into hiding in the quaint town of Split Creek, Oklahoma.
Handsome high school football coach Miles Laird can’t understand why the mysterious librarian will banter with him but insists they remain no more than friends. Then strange things start to happen that lead him to suspect there’s more to Paige than meets the eye.
I loved this book. It has the right blend of small town quaintness, romance, and danger, with a faith message that blends seamlessly into the plot. I enjoyed the way Ms. Mills crafted the character of Paige, making her believable as both a strong, trained CIA operative and as a pie-baking librarian. The plot kept me guessing, and the relationship between the two main characters came together in a believable way.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense and wants a fun, fast-paced read. It’s even more fun than a high school football game.
