Book Review: “Let Them Eat Cake” by Sandra Byrd

“Get a life, Alexandra Stuart. You have until July.”

Lexi Stuart is your basic prototypical chick lit heroine, but with a French twist. Her degree in French culture has gotten her nowhere career-wise. She’s living at home with the ‘rents (who are this close to evicting her just as soon as their dream house is completed) and to top it all off, she’s down-and-out in the romance department. In “Let Them Eat Cake”, Sandra Byrd had me at “bonjour”.

While setting out to find gainful employment, Lexi is lured (by the thought of a delicious café crème) into L’Esperance, a French café in the heart of downtown Seattle. On a whim, she drops off a resumé, even though she needs better pay than a counter position at a bakery can offer.

To her surprise, she is offered the job, and to her greater surprise, she accepts it. It turns out to be, if not the perfect job she had envisioned, a catalyst for potential romance, friendship, and a deepening walk with God. Not to mention the perfect opportunity to learn more about French baking.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lexi’s story, and could particularly relate to her desire to pursue her love of food and all things French. I loved the whimsical images that accentuate the story, such as an email, a note from a friend, and reviews for the recipes Lexi has posted on Allrecipes.com. There are enough of them to enhance the story, but not so many as to become cloying.

Then there are the recipes, which I personally always love in a story that revolves around food.

I would recommend this book to women who enjoy lighthearted women’s fiction and don’t mind being tempted to grab a hunk of good French bread or an almond croissant to chew on while they read. Hey, there are worse things to obsess over.
